K. A. J. Mackenzie House

Portland, Oregon

The K. A. J. Mackenzie House was built in 1894 for Doctor K. A. J. Mackenzie who was a founder of the University of Oregon Medical Schoool. The house was designed by the prominent architectural firm of Whidden and Lewis who also designed the Portland City Hall, and Multnomah County Courthouse. The design, which displays elements of both Richardsonian Romanesque and Shingle styles, is an important historic landmark. The building is rich with architectural detailing on both exterior and interior, and is constructed of quality materials on the exterior and the interior, including sandstone, slate, ornamental woodwork and plaster.

The project entailed preservation and repairs to the structure to remove deterioration, provide new weather protection and to develop solutions to meet current seismic design standards at the roof. The building received new slate roofing to match its original roof that had been removed. The project utilized copper flashings and rain drainage throughout.
