Sadler Kraus II

Aurora, Oregon

The Sadler & Kraus General Merchandise Store was established at this prominent corner site in the center of the Aurora Colony Historic District in 1907 by colony resident Arthur Kraus and John Sadler. The building was a local landmark during most of the 1900’s until it was lost due to fire in the 1990’s. The original building was constructed with concrete exterior walls and wood storefront detailing in a early commercial style with simplified classical details.

Historic Aurora has a large number of well preserved structures from its early colony period in the 1800’s. It is now a destination for historic activities, cultural events, and antique merchandise. The proposed building replaces the prior visual landmark. Its design recognizes changes to the town while respecting the prior historic building and the extant neighboring district buildings. The mercantile and office mixed use building addresses the adjacent business streets on three of its five sides. The west side opens up to a plaza to allow a sidewalk café. The south side is developed for office entry, and service needs. The building is part of an overall site plan that includes future commercial and residential buildings in a commons arrangement. Landscaping is referenced to the historic period for both plantings and improvements. The interior finishes utilize traditional (and environmentally green) materials.
