Officers Row
Vancouver, Washington
Officers’ Row is a National Register property consisting of the 21 structures that comprised the officers’ quarters at Vancouver Barracks. In 1985, the run down, wood frame buildings dating from 1849 to 1906, and the 17 acre property were acquired by the City of Vancouver.
After extensive study and citizen involvement, the City developed a program that included nine townhouse office buildings, a restaurant-museum in the 1849 Grant House (Building #11), government offices and public meeting spaces in the Marshall House (#15). The program also called for exterior restoration, rehabilitation of the primary interior spaces, and remodeling of the secondary interior rooms to accommodate new uses.
The most challenging design issue was the development of multi-tenant office and residential spaces in the one and two family dwellings, (for example six apartments units in a 6,000 square foot duplex), while at the same time preserving and restoring the primary rooms (Living Rooms, Parlors, Halls, Stairways, and Master Bedrooms). Spaces were divided vertically with new entries at side and rear. Historic trees were preserved, non-historic plant materials were removed and new plantings appropriate to the restoration period were installed.
