Bill’s Ranch, Colorado

Careful site planning was required both in locating and designing the house. The site was especially tight due to setbacks and sensitive envoronmental areas. The footprint was determined by wetlands that border the north and west sides and a creek to the east. Access to the site is by way of an abandoned rail spur now converted to a shared bikeway and local drive. National forest land is located adjacent to the house on the south and west sides.

The house is designed in an interpretation of the classic mountain chalet style. Rooms are oriented toward the spectacular views to the southwest and northwest. Extensive use is made of natural light for room daylighting. The interior utilizes quality finishes including Colorado Red sandstone with fossils for flooring at the entry and porch, tile, oak flooring and trim, granite counters, custom lighting and fixtures and selected areas having vault ceilings.

Located in the Rocky Mountains at 9,000 feet above sea level, the custom residence employs construction and materials chosen for extreme cold, snow and wind conditions in the area. Construction includes sensible passive energy design with limited north windows, triple glazing, R30 walls, interior orientation of the plumbing system, and use of materials chosen for protection from ultra violet light. Heating is by an infloor hydronic system. Septic system is a state of the art regenerative wetlands vegetation system. The water system uses a shallow well with a filtration system. Other features include steam shower, sauna and spa and extensive built-ins.
