Downtown Athletic Club

The Downtown Athletic Club facility was designed for the historic Ax Billy Department Store located in downtown Eugene. The design resolved the many programmatic problems of fitting an athletic club with varying and required sized rooms into an existing building. The basement area was increased in size for service functions, lockers, racquetball courts, and to allow for a new twenty five yard pool that extended under the public sidewalk. The complete athletic club includes a gym, aerobics room, weight training facility, locker and shower rooms for women, men, boys and girls. The facility also includes a conference room, full dining room and kitchen, juice bar, pro shop, and lobby.

The project involved an adaptive rehabilitation and addition to an early 1900’s store building. Care was taken to incorporate detailing and contemporary finishes with restored period finishes. The exterior two story walls were rehabilitated and the original storefront, of which only a small portion still existed, was restored. A setback roof addition provided the necessary additional program space.
