Albany Transmodal Depot & REA Transit Center
Albany, Oregon
Constructed in 1908, the Albany Southern Pacific Passenger Depot has been continuously used as a rail station. The station played an important historic role in the early development of Albany by allowing transportation of crops and goods and by providing a West Coast rail link. The building is designed in a Richardsonian Romanesque style. It features rough concrete block exterior masonry and broad eaves supported by heavy timbers. The building is the second station for the city of Albany at this site. Also located on the site is the historic wooden Rail Express Agency Building (REA) that was built at the same time.
The project rehabilitated both the depot and the REA building to accommodate Amtrak passenger rail and local transit needs for the next twenty years of anticipated growth and possible high speed rail service. The intact exterior of the depot building was repaired, while the deteriorated REA building exterior was rebuilt. The interiors received much needed historic rehabilitations that stressed retention of original material. Work included full seismic upgrade, entirely new mechanical and electrical systems, finishes and work spaces appropriate with the historic nature of the building. The firm provided historic research, consultation, all of the interior and exterior design, and direction to the A/E team for site revisions.
